Often editors will treat writers extremely badly, like they are on some sort of power trip. Now to be fair, one can only imagine the number of underwhelming writers or so-called authors that they have to deal with. Nevertheless, they come across as arrogant and rarely miss a chance to embellish their excellence. While attempting to be egalitarian and looking out for the reader or viewer, they generally make many errors themselves.
Some editors are extremely competent and excellent at what they do, but that is not always the case, many have egos that are completely unjustified, almost as if they think they know everything. For an author of experience and observation this is a little distracting, especially when the editors simply do not know what they are talking about. Isaac Asimov once discussed this problem, and he was right.
Editors are the number one reason that publications fail, books do not sell or trade journals go out of business. One editor once told me that a certain title, would not sell. Perhaps it wouldn’t and as I further pressed for more information listening to her complaints about an author who had turned in a book proposal, I learned a little bit about what the real problem here is.
She decided to go with a different author, one who was a shade bit better writer, but no experience in the field. I asked why and she said, because the title is what sells the book, and that she was in business to sell books. I then mentioned that I had a 4,000 book personal library and was getting rid of the books that read, which I did not find of any value. You see, I expressed my dismay that there are too many books of no substance out there. She said that she must sell books to stay in business and every book needs a good title and a hook.
Indeed, but then I thought, if she was so smart and so great and so wonderful, why didn’t she pick the book of the expert in the field and re-write the title, so the reader wouldn’t buy a book that was worthless, but had a great title? Surely, she is smart enough to think of a hook to sell a book? The reason that I think this is important is that as an Entrepreneur, I was always responsible for being the best, having the best marketing and satisfying the customer, but many book editors, just don’t get it.
